Organization Description

FreeState Justice is a social justice organization that works statewide to improve the lives of LGBTQ Marylanders and their families through legal services, policy advocacy, outreach, education, and coalition building. FreeState Justice Legal provides direct legal services through in-house counsel and pro bono attorney network.

Legal Assistance

Program Description:

FreeState Justice provides assistance with the following types of cases:

  • Name changes
  • Gender marker changes on birth certificates or State-issued identification
  • Discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, health care, school, public accommodations, and prisons/detention centers
  • Family law matters, including divorce or dissolution, child custody, child support, adoption
  • Legal protection from harassment or harm, including intimate partner (domestic) violence

In addition to cases that are handled by FreeState staff, many of our clients are served by members of our volunteer attorney network.
